WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — “A man who gave so much to his country got a big help getting around today.

Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Samuel Schoenheit was shot in the head in Afghanistan in 2008. His right side was paralyzed, but after years of intense therapy, he can walk and drive his brand new truck. It’s compliments of the Semper Fi Fund and Jeff Gordon Chevrolet.

The truck is equipped with a steering knob and a left-foot pedal.

The Semper Fi fund helps enhance quality of life for injured or sick members of the armed services.

“It does feel good, but I’m not out for fame and glory. ‘Hey, look at me.’ But it is nice to have everybody here to support me, and it feels nice,” Schoenheit said.

Schoenheit said the truck was a huge surprise. He’s moving to Nashville soon, so it will be a big help. He is so appreciative and said he’s certainly going to take care of his new ride.”
