Miles For Marines 2011 is scheduled to have their 3rd annual trail race on Saturday, June 25 at Westminster Park with a race start time of 8am. Spectators and runners alike will enjoy the shear beauty of Westminster Park and Camp Canaan and the 100’s of acres that the trails weave through. Distance of races are 15k (Crucible), 5k (Double Time), and a 1M fun run (Run For A Marine).
Participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt, race packet filled with goodies from sponsors and local vendor along with SWAG bags and Raffle tickets (at an additional cost). Numerous raffle prizes and over $1500 in prizes awarded by TrySports of Charlotte. Balance Energy Bars are supplying samples for to taste, including spectators.
On the course, a race participant can expect hills, grassy areas to maneuver through and winding paths. This is one of the unique challenges to trail racing versus road running. One can expect to have a slower pace, but what trail running offers includes core strengthening, lower injury occurrence, and a more forgiving platform for joints and bones. Trail running is becoming more popular for many reasons and the Carolina’s have much to offer to trail and Ultra runners. Ultra runners will use the 15k race as a training run for upcoming 50M or longer races.
In addition to the trails, Westminster Park will be filled with sponsor and vendor tents giving away product samples, having demonstrations on product or services, and offer food samplings along with bottled water. The Chick-fil-A Cow will be on site to cheer on the younger runners. Patriotic craft table, face painting and tattoos (temp) are part of the children’s activities. Sgt. Billy, USMC, will lead the young platoon as they run the 1M course and he will lead them in singing cadences. Who knows, maybe the Chick-fil-A Cow will even run the race!
The Semper Fi Fund is the recipient of all proceeds earned through the event. Last year, Miles For Marines raised $2500 and this year the goal is $5000.
The race is dedicated to Lcpl Kyle Carpenter, USMC who was injured in November 2010. Kyle resides in Lexington, SC with his parents and twin brothers as he recovers from endless number of surgeries. Kyle threw himself on a RPG to save fellow Marines during an ambush that left him critically wounded. Kyle ran (walked our innaugural race in 2009 and remains the youngest Marine to participate in Miles For Marines. He has been nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor. We honor Kyle this year by the dedication of Miles For Marines 2011.
