Thank you community volunteers for your help at our recent "Purple Heart Ornament Packing Party!" The event was once again a huge success.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Semper Fi Fund is preparing to mail Purple Heart Holiday ornaments to Marines and Sailors who have been wounded since 9/11 and who have received the Purple Heart. To help with packing and shipping the ornaments, The Semper Fi Fund hosted its second annual "Purple Heart Ornament Packing Party" in Dale City, VA on December 2nd. Hundreds of volunteers – Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, military families, high school students, and so many more – devoted their time and their hearts to ensuring that these special ornaments will be received in time for the holidays.
Started in 2009, this annual tradition brings the local community together and serves as a way for them to give to those who have given so much and to remind injured Marines and Sailors that they are not alone or forgotten during what can often be a difficult time of year for service members. Though intended as a simple gesture to show our appreciation for these service member's sacrifice, these beautiful ornaments can have a lasting impact on those who receive them, as expressed in their own words:
My husband (Marine) was injured 2x in Iraq and receives the Purple Heart ornament which I know your organization contributes to. I can’t tell you how much he appreciates the fact that he is still thought of and how proud he is of these ornaments. His first Christmas back after Iraq, he was so “bah humbug” but this past weekend, a few years later, I set up the tree and left the room for a minute, go back in and there he is hanging up his Purple Heart and other Marine Corps ornaments that I purchased (after seeing his affinity to the Purple Heart ornaments) – without me even asking for decorating help. Your ornaments have helped him get back into the holiday spirit and not focus so much on the Marines he lost in Iraq and feeling guilty about why he is celebrating with his family and they are not. Some may look at it as just an ornament but it has done much more than that for our family. Thanks so much, keep up that and all of the other great work you are doing! – Marine spouse
This morning my husband and I received a package with a 2011 Purple Heart Ornament inside. It was addressed to our son , Marine (who) was killed in Iraq. The ornament was a blessing. It was if the gift came from him. We put it in a special place on our tree. Since he died we have given money to Semper Fi from a Memorial Fund in his name. We know that he would want to help his fellow Marines. We will be thinking of our soldiers during the Warrior Games. Thank you – Parents of a Marine
I am a former Marine Purple Heart recipient. I received a letter and Christmas ornament in the mail the other day from the Semper Fi Fund. It meant a great deal to me, and I wanted to say thank you. It is inspiring to see how the Marine Corps continues to take care of our own. If there is anything I can do to help the Semper Fi Fund, please do not hesitate to ask. – LtCol/USMC
Thank you soooo much! You just made my Christmas! I know the boys will love the ornaments, not only this year but for years to come. As odd as it may sound, the "Christopher Tree" brings him home to us every year and truly is our most treasured tradition! Thank you for all you do for our injured marines. They deserve nothing but the best!
