UMSMA Charity Golf Tournament Update


On Friday, April 16, 2010 in a heavy and cool morning dew, 144 of San Diego’s golfer’s embarked on a great day of golf at Encinitas Ranch Golf Course. These golf die-hards were dedicated to raising contributions on behalf of the UMS Management Association for the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund.

What made the day even more special were the guests we had joining us out on the greens and fairways!


Several Marines from the Wounded Warrior Battalion aboard Camp Pendleton were sponsored by other fellow golfers to take part and play in the tournament.


After checking in and receiving our goodie bags and buying our mulligans and contest cards, we grabbed a warm coffee and some breakfast treats from the continental breakfast bar and hit the driving range and putting green to warm up.


Monica England, the coordinator of the day’s events was wearing her smile and greeting the golfers, directing her helpers and she was excited that the day she spent months planning for was finally here! It was so much fun and we have never been to a tournament like this before!


There were beverage vendors at many of the holes with complimentary drinks for the golfers as they passed through. We had our choice of Beer from Gordon Biersch, Lemon Drops and Bloody Mary’s made with Blue Ice Vodka, Fortaleza Tequila shots, Mimosas made with Zonin Prosecco and drinks made with Jim Beam, Makers Mark and Cruzan Rum. Kathleen was our cart girl and she drove around all day with a smile, passing out complimentary sodas, water and domestic beer.


If we wanted a energy drink for a little pick me up, Verve was on one of the holes giving out complimentary cans of their all natural energy drink. We were able to smoke a cigar at the Payne Mason Cigar booth on hole #1 and take a shot of Karlssons Gold Vodka to warm us up! If you were stiff or in any discomfort, those ladies from Therapeutic Solutions gave a really good neck and shoulder massage at hole # 4!


It was wonderful!


It was a nice touch to see and meet all the vendors that came out to support the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund.

After a morning of golf, the afternoon was filled with fantastic food from CanAm Cuisine and there was even a 4 foot tall ice sculpture of a golfer created by Mark at SoCal Ice and trays of sushi rolls from Harney Sushi in Oceanside which was created by their very talented executive chef, Robert Ruiz!


The fun continued with a silent auction, an exhibition by the world’s fastest golfer, Ogie Ogron, recognition for the volunteers, awards to the Marines from the Wounded Warrior Battalion and finally the Master of Ceremonies, George Renteria announced the prizes for golf and raffle winners.


The day ended with the warm sun shining on our smiles as we listened to UMSMA’s Vice President, Shirley Deese announce to Wendy Lethin from the IMSFF that $10,000 was raised for our wounded and critically ill soldiers! That is why we came and it was a fantastic day for all!
