CGA and CommonGround Golf Course help support injured veterans through instruction and play

CommonGround Golf Course and the Colorado Golf Association recently hosted 15 injured veterans (14 men and 1 woman) from The Semper Fi Fund’s Team. The team consisted of Marines, Army and Air Force members from all over the country. Veterans were hand selected by the fund to participate and learn the benefits of golf to aid in their Recovery Through Sport.

Four golf professionals were on hand to assist the veterans in small groups, personalizing the experience of learning the game. Additionally, Golf 4 the Disabled provided adaptive golf carts to support players while they played the championship course in Aurora. After the first day of instruction, the veterans were hosted by the PGA Superstore to try out and get fitted for Callaway golf clubs and then were provided a catered dinner as well.

The first two days of instruction were set up with five stations consisting of: full swing, chipping, pitching, putting and playing a hole on the par 3 course. Additionally, they learned the rules of the game, etiquette and practiced the technical skills required on an actual hole. On the last day, the veterans played the championship course. For some team members, this was their first-ever round of golf on a regulation course.

The Semper Fi veterans weren’t the only ones enthralled with the program. One of CommonGround’s regulars was so moved by what the CGA was doing with the Semper Fi veterans that he offered to buy all of their Gatorades for the day. Sharing his own military experience, he thanked all the veterans for their service and was grateful the CGA was doing a program for them.

Erin Gangloff, CGA Director of Programs, is working to ensure that this partnership continues in the future and that CommonGround can host additional veterans year after year. “Programs like this need the support of members and donors to continue” she said. Please consider making donation to support the Semper Fi Fund, or the Colorado Golf Foundation which supports CGA programs that benefit the community through the game of golf.

The Semper Fi Fund’s Team Semper Fi and Team America’s Fund provides encouragement, motivation, and peer support for injured and wounded veterans with their Recovery Through Sport programs.  The Semper Fi Fund provides equipment, uniforms, fees and travel expenses for the injured team members, to foster a supportive yet competitive environment that will help the athletes recover to their fullest potential.
