THE BATTLE OF AN NASIRIYAH – Garden of Eden Marines
“Not for fame or reward, not for place or rank, not lured by ambition or goaded by necessity, but in simple obedience to duty as they understood it, these men suffered all, sacrificed all, dared all and died.”
The Battle of An Nasiriyah is one of the most important and also misunderstood engagements of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The battle was fought in and around An Nasiriyah, a large city in southern Iraq which lies along the banks of the Euphrates River, very near the ancient city of Ur, known as the cradle of civilization and the site of the Garden of Eden. 23 Task Force Tarawa Marines were killed in action (KIA) and 50 wounded. 11 Soldiers from the United States Army 507th Maintenance Company were KIA, 10 wounded and 6 captured then later rescued. During this action, the Marines secured two bridges spanning the Euphrates River and spearheaded the advance north to Baghdad.
