Service members attend first ever Semper Fi Fund and America’s Fund Mountain Biking Camp in Utah

Park City, UT – Twenty injured post-9/11 veterans are going to challenge themselves and perceptions of what is possible at a mountain biking camp from August 1-5. The camp will further enable the athletes, members of Team Semper Fi and Team America’s Fund, to recover through sport as they explore various trails around Park City, some on handcycles adapted for their specific needs.

The mountain bike camp is one of many programs the Semper Fi Fund and America’s Fund provide to wounded, injured, and critically ill service members and their families that include direct financial assistance, emotional support, and recuperative sports programs.

At the camp, attendees will learn a variety of mountain biking techniques and skills. Each day, they will ride on nearby trails, including the Trailside pump track, Round Valley, and Deer Valley. Mountain biking supports the recovery of injured service members because it serves as both a physical challenge, engaging the full body to control the bike, and a way to mentally recharge. Studies show that adaptive sports aid in recovery by reducing stress, lowering reliance on medications, and helping participants achieve more independence.

“I’m looking forward to finding another form of physical fitness at the mountain bike camp,” said Steven Simmons, a US Navy veteran and Team Semper Fi athlete. Before he started using a wheelchair, Simmons was an avid outdoorsman. Now, he has set big goals for himself in the field of adaptive sports with the help of Semper Fi Fund and America’s Fund. Simmons: “For many, when we leave the military for reasons outside our control, we all lose something we held close. What we lost is the brotherhood; the bond of being part of something bigger than just one individual, one Marine, one Sailor, one Soldier, or one Airman. With Team Semper Fi and Team America's Fund, we have the opportunity to feel that connection again.”

Team Semper Fi and Team America’s Fund are made up of service members and veterans who are overcoming significant challenges after facing injury or critical illness while in service to our country.
