Two-time Purple Heart Recipient to Receive New Smart Home

FREDERICKSBURG, Virginia – Marine Corps Sergeant (Sgt) John Peck, a two-time Purple Heart recipient and quadruple amputee, will be on hand for the groundbreaking for his new Smart Home on Thursday, July 19. The Semper Fi Fund, in partnership with "Building for America's Bravest," has contributed $25,000 towards the construction of Sgt. Peck's new Smart Home.

"Building for America's Bravest" is a program that was created by The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the Gary Sinise Foundation to build smart homes for severely wounded veterans.

The Smart Home that Sgt. Peck will be receiving will be custom designed to address the needs of providing energy efficiency, ease of accessibility and automation with such features as controlled temperature zones, lighting and mobility devices, as well as a home security system to ultimately provide the Sgt. Peck with the capability to live independently.

Sgt Peck was injured by an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) during combat in May 2010, while serving with 3rd Battalion 1st Marines in Afghanistan. He suffered the loss of both of his legs above the knee, his right arm above the elbow as well as his left hand. Sgt Peck has been assisted by the Semper Fi Fund after sustaining injuries during deployment in 2007 and again after redeploying in 2010. Sgt Peck is currently going through recovery and rehabilitation at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.

In addition to the $25,000 grant to help build Sgt. Peck's new home, the Semper Fi Fund has also assisted Sgt. Peck by providing him with an adapted vehicle grant, as well as assisted in keeping family members at Sgt Peck's bedside since 2010.
