Team Semper Fi & Team America's Fund to Honor Fallen 9/11 Figherfighter Stephen Siller in Brooklyn-to-NYC 5K Event

SEPT. 22, 2015 (NEW YORK, NY) – With the 14th anniversary of the horrors of 9/11 fresh in everyone’s minds, tens of thousands of people will be participating in a very special 5k event on September 27.

Those who enter the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk will be following the same path that firefighter Stephen Siller took on that fateful day in 2001 when he parked his truck by the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and ran to the World Trade Center site with 60 pounds of gear on his back—only to give up his life while saving the lives of others.

Among the participants will be 35 members of Team Semper Fi and Team America’s Fund—members of our volunteer military services who became wounded, critically ill or injured as the result of their post-9/11 service to our country. Donations raised from the run assist family members of the first responders: fallen firefighters, paramedics and police officers.

“This marks the sixth year that our Team Semper Fi and Team America’s Fund athletes will be part of this event,” said Semper Fi Fund CEO and Founder Karen Guenther. “Many of the more than 14,400 service members we’ve assisted over the past decade enlisted as a direct result of the events of 9/11, so this 5k has a very special place in our hearts.”

In addition to the 5k that begins Sunday morning at about 7 a.m. (and ends at the Freedom Tower), Team Semper Fi and Team America’s Fund athletes will be taking a tour of the 9/11 museum on Saturday afternoon and enjoying a pre-race pasta dinner Saturday evening.

“It’s going to be a very emotional day for all of us, of course, but especially for our athletes,” Guenther added. “Stephen is a remarkable symbol of the very best of human nature that helped us all get through a uniquely tragic day in our history. It’s a profound privilege to be able to honor his sacrifice and the sacrifices of our first responders.”

About Team Semper Fi and Team America’s Fund

Made up of more than 1,300 service members who qualify for assistance, Team Semper Fi and Team America’s Fund—collectively known as the Peter Murphy Semper Fi Fund Sports Program—are the heart and inspiration of the Semper Fi Fund’s rehabilitative Athletic Program. The teams are made up of servicemen and women who have overcome significant challenges in their service to our country, and who have embraced the winning athletic spirit on their road to recovery. They are an inspiration to us all, particularly to their fellow recovering service members.

The Semper Fi Fund provides the team with coaches, specialized sporting equipment, entry fees and travel expenses to athletic events. Athletes are also given the opportunity to receive high-level training from former and current Olympic and Paralympic athletes through a partnership with the U.S. Paralympics.
