Peter Murphy Semper Fi Fund Sports Program
New Name Honors Longtime Semper Fi Fund Board Member and Counsel to the Commandant of the Marine Corps
February 17, 2014 (Camp Pendleton, CA) – Team Semper Fi and Team America’s Fund—two athletic programs for wounded service members who have embraced the spirit of recovery through sport—have been consolidated under a new name: The Peter Murphy Semper Fi Fund Sports Program.
The name honors Peter Michael Murphy, Semper Fi Fund board member and Counsel to the Commandant of the Marine Corps from 1984 to 2004, who passed away on November 15, 2013, due to complications associated with Parkinson’s syndrome.
“When so many said that the Semper Fi Fund couldn’t be done, it was Peter who stepped in and told us that not only should we create the Fund, but that he would help,” said Semper Fi Fund Chairman and CEO Karen Guenther. “He did exactly that, and served on the Board of Directors right up until his passing. He was an instrumental and irreplaceable part of guiding the Fund to where it is today.”
The civilian equivalent of a three-star general, Peter Murphy was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Presidential Rank Award of Distinguished Executive in 1996 and 2004 and the Presidential Rank of Meritorious Award in 1992 and 2000. In 1997, the Secretary of Defense presented him with the Department of Defense Distinguished Civilian Service Award, the highest honor awarded by the Secretary to a career employee.
When the Pentagon was attacked on September 11, 2001, Peter’s office sustained significant damage – he literally fell through the floor and was fortunate to have escaped the attack with minor injuries. His office was one of the locations from which the American flag was displayed as the rebuilding of the Pentagon was taking place, and the window of his office proudly displayed the Marine Corps flag.
“Peter’s remarkable and extraordinary inspiration to all who knew him is aligned perfectly with the same spirit that drives the Team Semper Fi and Team America’s Fund programs, too,” Karen added, “which is why establishing The Peter Murphy Semper Fi Sports Program seemed so appropriate.”
