Baltimore, MD - There will be a 24-hour lacrosse game benefiting wounded service members. The event seeks to educate communities about the challenges Veterans face and connects with service members while rallying to support organizations that are helping our nation’s heroes via the common bond of lacrosse. Participants play on one of two teams (Stars or Stripes) during a particular time slot with others of similar age and skill level. ALTO PASS — Rob Jones may have lost his legs in Afghanistan in 2010, but he has not lost his sense of adventure.
The retired Marine sergeant from Lovettsville, Va., is cycling from Bar Harbor, Maine to southern California in an effort to raise money for veterans.
Jones said his trip started in October and he has been riding about 35 miles a day. He has ridden a total of 2,093 miles Wednesday with his trip from Goreville to Von Jakob Winery & Brewery in Alto Pass. Jones said he has calculated his whole trip will be around 5,400 miles. We wouldn’t be at all surprised to find this photo of Staff Sergeant Jesse Cottle and his wife Kelly on many “best of 2013” lists. It’s a remarkable illustration of service and love—and the Semper Fi Fund is honored to have played a small part in it.
Jesse joined the Marine Corps in 2003 and served three deployments as a radio operator in Iraq. He transferred to an EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) team, spent two years in Japan, and was deployed to Afghanistan in February 2009. Read the rest of this entry »
