W.E. Winters Amphibious Warrior Mud Run

January 23, 2013

Auburn, AL – On October 23rd 1983, a truck slammed into The Marine Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. From this days tragedy we lost 220 Marines, 18 Sailors, and 3 U.S. Army soldiers. Many others were also wounded. Being that these men were Marines, it hits home to the Marine Platoon here at Auburn University, But Maj. W.E. Winter was more than a Marine, he was an Auburn Graduate. So that hits home to us all. Although he is not the only Marine to ever have given his life from our institution, we honor his dedication and steadfastness to duty along with all of our wounded veterans that currently serve, or have served, to keep our freedoms. This spring we would like to personally invite you to the 3rd Annual W.E Winter Amphibious Warrior Mud Run. If you have run with us before, let me be the first to tell you that this is an entirely new event, with a different location to allow for larger than life obstacles, mud pits large enough to sink a 747, and a little bit of space to let your Southern pride show! With all that is going on you can also be assured that every penny that we raise will be donated to the Semper Fi Fund as well as the Semper Fi Society to assist those who have given so much. So bring out the family for a day running, mud-boggin', and some great music. There will be plenty of events to keep the interest of everyone in attendance!

The Pain Within: War Wounds Run Deep for Returning Veterans

January 23, 2013

By Karen Guenther: Founder, President and CEO of the Semper Fi Fund | The Huffington Post | huffingtonpost.com | January 23, 2013

Amidst the end-of-year hustle and bustle, most Americans were understandably preoccupied with shopping, travel and family. So many Americans also failed to notice the tragic milestone we passed this holiday season: in 2012, combat deaths were outnumbered by veteran suicides, reaching a record high. It's a startling statistic, particularly when you pause to consider its implications. For the last decade, we've seen tens of thousand of soldiers return home with injuries, many of whom had serious brain or spinal damage. But these numbers only account for the wounds we can see -- and it's the damage outside our field of vision that's sometimes the most lethal. Read the rest of this entry »

Community Athlete: Edward Wells at Lady Bird Hike and Bike Trail

January 21, 2013

Lady Bird Hike and Bike Trail – Friends and family have asked, "what do you want to do for your 40th birthday?" I decided while jogging and thinking about this question. I hope that everyone participates with me. I want two things wrapped up into one event. First, a gesture of defiance to the BIG 40. Second, a gesture of gratitude. On February 23rd, I will be at Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail here in Austin and I'm going to run. I'm going to run until I can't run anymore. I'm going to do it for me and I'm going to do it for those that have made my 40 years possible, our veterans. For those that have sacrified their bodies, their minds and their families to ensure my family is safe. For my dad, my wife's grandfather and friends that served.

I want everyone out there to decide how much you want to give for every mile I run. The most I have run at one time in the last two years is 8 miles and I have not trained for this other than jogging 15 to 20 miles a week. Let's see how these old knees hold up!

Friends and family should come down to the trail and run with me. Those that don't want to run can camp out on the Zilker lawn and wave on each lap. You'll find us in Zilker at Lou Neff Point. We will make a little bit of difference for a few wounded veterans. Please join me, come on, its my 40th birthday! – Edward Wells
