A memorial run to remember a local Marine lost in the line of duty continues this April.

The ‘Harper Classic Sgt. Brad Harper Memorial Run’ honors a Zanesville native and Tri-Valley graduate. He joined the Marines in 1998 and was deployed to Iraq in 2005 where he died along with 13 others in the Lima Company of Columbus, Ohio. Now Harper’s family holds the run/walk to honor his memory.

“This is what Brad would want,” said Brad’s father, Steve Harper. “He loved his country and his community. He loved his fellow men and women in the armed services and I know he would want us to do something. ”

Multisports owner Nick Beach said he’s proud to honor a fellow Marine and friend each year.

“The Harper Classic is something that we’ve been involved with for a long, long time,” said Beach. “I graduated high school with Brad, joined the Marine Corps with Brad, real good friends up until he was killed in Iraq, so to be a part of this event for us as Muskingum Multisports is our way to show the community who Brad was. ”

All proceeds from the event benefit the Semper Fi fund and the America’s fund which provides financial assistance to those critically ill or injured in the Armed Forces.

“Over 120 million dollars in grants have been donated to families to help them get back to the real world,” said Beach. “When they say they’re giving money, [when] they ask for money, it goes to the programs that they say it’s going to and that’s what’s special about the Semper Fi fund.”
