Marine Sgt Kenny Lyon receives keys to new home

Fredericksburg, VA – On April 9, 2011 the Semper Fi Fund was honored to be a part of the home dedication for Sgt Kenny Lyon, USMC. Sgt Lyon was presented the keys to a specially adapted home from Home for Our Troops. The Semper Fi Fund provided a grant of $25,000 toward the construction of the home and also presented a new hand-controlled riding lawn mower to Sgt Lyon at the ceremony!

The home is the 100th home started by Homes for Our Troops, Inc. and it was built in the incredible time period of one week, made possible by the efforts of Atlantic Builders and volunteers and donors from the community.

Sgt Lyon stated, “The words ‘thank you’ feel so cheap when I won’t have to worry about anything anymore.”

Hundreds of donors and supporters from the local community came out to welcome Sgt Lyon into his new home. One of the highlights of the event was the surprise visit from Col Paulette Schank, an USAF nurse. Col Schank was at the medivac hospital when Sgt Lyon was brought in for his injuries and worked tirelessly to save him. When the hospital ran out of Sgt Lyon’s blood type, Col Schank gave up her own blood to save his life. Col Schank spoke at the ceremony about helping Sgt Lyon and how they will be forever linked by blood. She also mentioned how great it was to see him make it home to his family friends.

Sgt Lyon was injured May 2006 by a mortar attack near Fallujah, Iraq while working to repair his disabled Light Armored Vehicle. He was left with severe injuries including a left leg above the knee amputation, left arm nerve damage, and a shattered jaw.

For the past five years Sgt Lyon has gone through recovery and rehabilitation and the Semper Fi Fund has been providing family assistance grants to Sgt Lyon and his family since his injury. The Semper Fi Fund has been honored to be there along the way, and it is with joy that we along with all of our supporters say: “Welcome home Marine!”
