Semper Fi Fund presents Specially Adapted Vehicle to Marine Corps Sergeant

BELTSVILLE, Maryland, April 19, 2012 – Quadruple amputee, Marine Corps Sergeant (Sgt) John Peck alongside his family received a specially adapted truck with one-of-a-kind modifications at the Ride-Away Handicap Equipment Corporation in Beltsville, Maryland on Wednesday, April 18. This gift of mobility for Sgt Peck was presented at no cost to him or his family. The specially adapted truck was made possible through a $22,928.10 Adaptive Transportation grant from the Semper Fi Fund and a grant from the Veterans Administration. In addition to the adapted vehicle grant, the Semper Fi Fund has also assisted in keeping family members at Sgt Peck’s bedside since 2010.

Sgt Peck was injured by an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) during combat in June 2010, while serving with 3rd Battalion 1st Marines in Afghanistan. He suffered the loss of both of his legs above the knee, his right arm above the elbow as well as his left hand. Sgt Peck is a two-time Purple Heart recipient and has been assisted by the Semper Fi Fund after sustaining injuries during deployment in 2007 and again after redeploying in 2010. Sgt Peck is currently going through recovery and rehabilitation at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.

The Semper Fi Fund helps fund specially adapted vehicles to heroes like Sgt Peck, through its Adaptive Transportation grants. These grants are provided to post 9/11 service members who have been injured or critically-ill. Modified transportation is a vital component to a successful rehabilitation for someone who is wheelchair bound. It is key to ensuring that appointments and therapies are easily attended, and more freedom of mobility is given to the service member and their families.
