Every 4th of July, the entire nation gathers together to celebrate the freedoms that we are uniquely blessed to experience, yet sometimes take for granted. One year ago this month, a young Corporal named Jessie Fletcher was deployed, and soon experienced firsthand the price of the freedoms we benefit from each day.
While on his second deployment in Afghanistan, Jessie’s patrol team was ordered to reorganize to provide additional rear security in a heavily mined area. While escorting another Marine to his position, Jessie stepped on a non-metallic pressure plate. The improvised explosive device (IED) detonated, costing Jessie both legs, two fingers on his left hand, and his right thumb. In that instant, Jessie also lost his independence.
On a day-to-day basis, personal independence is easy to take for granted, especially when it comes to routine activities such as walking, cooking, and playing an instrument or favorite sport. After his injury, Jessie had to fight to regain these measures of independence; with the support of his friends, family, and the Semper Fi Fund, Jessie has continued his journey to a full recovery, and is well on his way to reclaiming his freedoms.
“Being independent on an individual level is being able to move, and being a productive member of society on your own. Just having that is a blessing in itself that we take advantage of every day and don’t even realize it…The Semper Fi Fund has definitely been one of the most important parts of learning my own independence and it has been able to teach me a lot about my own mobility alone. Having that support whenever I needed – it’s been so surprising.”
