Congratulations Corey! Team Semper Fi member and Semper Fi Fund Community Outreach Coordinator, Corey Petersen recently won the 2011 Ms. Wheelchair California in Los Angeles. Along with winning the title, she also won Ms. Congeniality, and is the first Veteran to hold the title of Ms. Wheelchair California.
Corey, a retired Staff Sergeant of the United States Marine Corps, is a member of Team Semper Fi, our “Recovery Through Sports” program. She has participated in the Marine Corps Marathon hand-cycling competition and finished 3rd place in 2010 in the female division, and she has received Gold Medals at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games for shot put, javelin, bowling and a silver medal for hand-cycling. Corey encompasses the true spirit of Team Semper Fi — embracing the fighting, athletic spirit to assist with her recovery.
Corey suffered a T5 spinal cord injury as the result of a snowmobiling accident in 2007 but has not let that hold her back from living life to the fullest. She will continue to spread the word about the benefits of sports for rehabilitation during her reign as well as through her contact with Team Semper Fi members, Veterans and people with disabilities. In the year-long reign as Ms. Wheelchair California, Corey will have many responsibilities that include meeting with elected officials to affect positive change for people with disabilities, speaking engagements, public appearances, and she will ride on the Kiwanis International Rose Parade float.
Again, we congratulate Corey on winning Ms. Wheelchair California 2011! Please join us in cheering on Corey at the Ms. Wheelchair America in August 2011!
