Home Depot Foundation continues their support for our Service members

If you’re one of the millions of homeowners who head off to Home Depot this time of year to stock up on materials for those summer home improvement projects, you’ll be happy to know that those orange vests stand for far more than helping you find the items you need.

Since 2011, The Home Depot Foundation (THDF) has committed half a billion dollars to veteran-related causes – including the Semper Fi Fund. With assistance from THDF, the Fund has been able to significantly improve the lives of many service members and their families. Two recent examples:

Marine Capt. Don from Virginia experienced 2 serious medical conditions while on active duty: internal bleeding and a brain aneurysm. After medically retiring from the Marine Corps, Don became a leathersmith apprentice through the Semper Fi Fund Apprenticeship Program. His natural talent for leathersmithing helped him gain approval for a basement remodel to create a dedicated space to work on his craft.

Lance Cpl. John from Florida was shot in his leg while serving in Iraq. The wounds he sustained led to a nearly fatal brain infection. As a result, John is quadriplegic; his mother is his full-time caregiver. The flooring in their home was not waterproof – it was fraying at the edges and moisture retention was a real concern, because of John’s condition. The Fund and THDF were able to make a number of home modifications, including the installation of new waterproof flooring.

In her Thank You note, John’s Mother  said “Thank you and Semper Fi Fund for the new flooring - and thank you for all that you do for our veterans!"

The Home Depot Foundation is very receptive to listening to the needs of wounded service members,” says Susan Rocco, vice president of case management at the Fund. “They are a wonderful partner in our mission to provide resources and support for combat wounded, critically ill and catastrophically injured members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families. All of us at the Fund are thrilled to be working alongside them.”
