In early 2003, a small group of military spouses and I sat around my kitchen table at Camp Pendleton wondering how we could help injured Marines and Sailors returning home from Iraq. We officially incorporated on May 17, 2004, and we just celebrated our anniversary —13 years dedicated to serving those who preserve our freedom. Anniversaries provide an opportunity to look back at the road one has traveled — and what a road it has been.
The Semper Fi Fund has expanded from assisting Marines and Sailors to serving military members and the families from all branches of the Armed Forces. It is our honor to assist the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. We began the Semper Fi Fund in the spring of 2004 with just $500 and a desire to help. We could not have foreseen the level of assistance that was needed to support our post-9/11 wounded, critically ill and injured service members and their families. Since then, the $500 has grown into $150 million of assistance given, and the original three service members and their families has grown to 18,500 service members and 10,000 families. The need for what we do only continues to grow.
Not a day goes by that I don’t feel humbled and blessed by the volunteers and staff — the majority who are military spouses and veterans — that I am surrounded by. Our team works tirelessly to provide assistance to the men and women who serve America. We could not have survived these past 13 years without their dedication, will-power and compassion for our mission.
Our supporters and team have had such a direct and positive impact on so many lives. The Fund would not exist if not for the generosity and passion of the community. Thank you for being part of the Semper Fi Fund family — here’s to many more years of working together to serve those who preserve our freedom.
