UVA and Navy Face Off in Virginia Beach

August 30, 2007 - For Immediate Release – Two top ten NCAA Division I lacrosse teams will face off in an exhibition game in Virginia Beach, VA. Preseason #3 Virginia and #8 Navy will play on Friday night, October 5th at 7 pm at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.

Each team has local talent on their rosters. Cape Henry Collegiate alumni Ryan Kelly and Mike Timms are both 4th years on the UVA squad. Brian Striffler, a recent graduate of Norfolk Academy, will be a freshman midfielder for the Midshipmen.

The Hampton Roads Chapter of US Lacrosse and the Hampton Roads Council of the U. S. Navy League will be hosting this event for the third time. Previous games have raised over $100,000. All money received from the game will go to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, a charity dedicated to helping injured Marines and their families.

Tickets will be on sale the day of the event starting at 5:00pm. Adults are priced at $8 each, students and military tickets are $5 each. Those wishing to send donations should make their checks payable to Hampton Roads Chapter of US Lacrosse and mail them to 1373 Air Rail Avenue Virginia Beach VA 23455. The Chapter is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization and will send a tax donation letter upon receipt of donations.

The oldest sport in North America has become one of the fastest growing team sports in the US. Youth Membership has more than tripled since 1999 to nearly 100,000. Similarly, Hampton Roads lacrosse has experienced dramatic growth. Ten years ago the area started with 150 youth players and currently there are over 1600 players.
