Sergeant Shurvon Phillip was finishing a patrol and returning to base in his HUMVEE when it was hit by an IED in May of 2005. All service members in the vehicle were injured, but Shurvon's injuries were the most severe. He suffered a broken left leg, lung blast, six broken ribs, and his jaw was broken in four places. Six days after the incident, Shurvon's brain was deprived of oxygen, resulting in his traumatic brain injury. Shurvon is now paralyzed and unable to communicate with speech. The Semper Fi Fund sends our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Navy Musician 1st Class Kenneth Fennell. On December 24, 2012, Kenneth passed away after a yearlong battle with a grade-four glioblastoma, (an inoperable brain tumor). SAN MARCOS, Calif. – A Southern California ice hockey team comprised of active and former service members made a huge play Jan. 13 when they presented the Semper Fi Fund with a check for $1,400.
The team, Patriots Hockey, raised the money at the ECHL’s Ontario Reign game Dec. 1 in Ontario, Calif. After spending three periods and an overtime in the corridors of Citizens Business Bank Arena, home of the Reign, raising money for the fund by selling Patriots Hockey t-shirts and accepting donations, the team then took the ice to take on Ontario Fire Department’s hockey team. MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – At 6 a.m., with the cold San Diego breeze making them shiver, volunteers with the Officers' Wives' Club hosted the second annual Flight Line Dash aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., Jan. 12.

Thank you to ALL of you for your hard work, dedication and support! Through all kinds of weather, injuries and a possible Government shut down, you dedicated a good part of this past year to training and fundraising for our injured and critically ill service members. What an outstanding accomplishment you have made. At this year's marathon you were part of the largest charity team in the Marine Corps Marathon.
We thank you so much for not only raising funds, but most importantly, raising awareness of the needs of our injured and critically ill service members. This amazing team will be hard to top, but we are hopeful that you'll join us again next year and we're confident that our 2014 runners will enjoy the challenge as much as you have.

ABOUT THE MARINE CORPS MARATHON:
The MCM was established in 1976, and as of 2009 the MCM became the fourth largest marathon in the United States and the eighth largest in the world with runners from more than 50 participating countries.
The race typically occurs a few weeks before the United States Marine Corps birthday on November 10. The Marine Corps Marathon is known as "The People's Marathon" because it is open to all runners ages 14 and above, and is the largest marathon not to offer prize money.

Military personnel are committing suicide at a rate greater than they are dying in battle. In 2011, there were 283 confirmed Army, Reserve, and National Guard suicides, according to the Defense Department. Last year, it appears, the tolling bells rang an even sadder result. In the first 11 months of 2012, there were 303 "potential" suicides among the same group, with 210 so far confirmed by investigators.
