ITAWAMBA COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) --A Colorado man, making his way across the country, made a stop in Mississippi on Tuesday.

Matt Littrell, a veteran, is making the trip to raise money for the Semper Fi Fund to help his fellow veterans with physical and emotional wounds. He started at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and is headed to Camp Pendleton in California.

Littrell says some of the issues veterans suffer from you can't immediately see. Loneliness, despair and thoughts of suicide are just to name a few.

"I've been there," he said. "I know where those guys are. I've been on the wrong side of that table looking at a pistol one night... I was almost one of those statistics. And after that night i woke up a few days later and knew that i was doing this ride."

He said this trail isn't easy, but neither is the life some veterans face after returning from duty.

"If it were easy, it wouldn't be worth it."

Littrell sleeps outside every night at the houses of people willing to let him live off their land. His city-to-city trip across the nation will take about nine months. So far, Littrell has raised more than $4,000 for the Semper Fi Fund.
