Several of our catastrophically injured service members have started down their new path of life after months of rehabilitation. They still have desires to be independent and do the things they once did, but they are now limited due to the loss of multiple limbs. A new path of life requires a new method of transportation, and that is why the Semper Fi Fund assisted these Marines with a dream machine: a wheelchair with a track instead of wheels. Arizona – The Ride 430 Challenge is a non-profit cycling event that helps give America's injured military service people and their families hope and assistance as they travel the road to recovery. This year's race will begin on October 9th and complete on October 12th as the group rides through the beautiful mountains of northern Arizona, passing through historic towns such as Wickenburg, Prescott, Strawberry, and Payson before finally arriving in Scottsdale under police escort.
The Ride is a four-day, 430-miles challenge in which cyclists must complete more than 100 miles each day, including mountain climbs. In addition to training and completing the ride, participants must fundraise, with the average rider raising more than $6,600 for the cause, more per rider than any event of its kind. Money raised by the Ride 430 Challenge supplements military assistance and bridges gaps to help injured service people and families who lost loved ones recover. Our funding helps provide everything from financial assistance, scholarships and adaptive sports equipment for injured heroes to camps for kids who've lost a parent in combat. Read more about the ride.
Registration for the 2013 Ride430 Challenge will open March 1st, 2013. This year the group of riders has a new route that will bring a challenge, physically, that few of them have faced. With over 16,000 feet of vertical climbing, this coarse will test the legs of even our most experienced riders.
The real challenge, however, will not be the ride; The challenge will be making sure that our injured heroes and their families are taken care of. As the rest of the country wrestles with politics and economic issue, we still have heroes and families with incredible needs. Join in the ride430 to raise funds and awareness in support of the many servicemen and women who are currently on the road to recovery.
